Shi-Da Road - The favourite area of the artsy people is located in the southern part of Taipei. Therefore, it’s named “South Village” as well. Now it’s like Greenwich in London or New Soho in New York more and more now with more and more artsy concept cafés around. There are many coffee shops here for a long time. Among them, some shop keepers have transformed the idea of café into a multi concept to combine coffee with art.
So next time, if you happen to have a chance ...
We've pretty much heard a lot about Mag:Net Cafe, saGuijo, Route 196 (new!), Penguin Cafe Malate, and now there's 6underground. Ofcourse this venue is not entirely new in the scene. It has been aggressively promoting up and coming local bands in 2004 (at its most prominent at their former venue in Makati City) and continues to do so in their new location at Pasig City (right beside Makati City).
6UG (as a lot of people call it) has so far produced 2 album compilations under its own label...
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
The bands have got to thank the many people who pour in the gigs that sometimes there's no breathing room in the cafe and bars. The venues that are considered hotspots for these events are Mag:Net Cafe in Katipunan and Bonifacio High Street, SaGuijo in Makati, Route 196 in Katipunan, 6underground in Ortigas, and Penguin Cafe in Malate, Manila.
Mag:Net has two venues open at Katipunan in Quezon City, and at Bonifacio High Street in Taguig City. The ...
Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4
For a community and scene that is just growing and really strengthening as a network, oftentimes venues are scarce. But GreenPapaya Art Projects, an art space run by artist Peewee Roldan and contemporary dancer Donna Miranda, has been supportive and dedicated to the experimental music and art scene. This also applies to Mag:net Galleries, having venues in 3 cities in Metro Manila. Although Mag:net galleries cater to different types of audiences, s...
From the time I was in school, Aarey's Energee drink has been the only soft drink that has got me hooked on to it. Unlike the colas of today that harm the body, this drink actually has nutritional value since its milk based. Many people even in India have not heard of this drink because its unique to the city and perhaps a few places in the state of Maharashtra.
Energee, that's how its spelt, is not available in any retail outlets or general stores, but Aarey Milk, the producer of the d...
Malls in Mumbai, remind me of the old nursery rhyme, 'Old MacDonald had a farm... here a mall, there a mall everywhere a mall,' that's what it has become, with the first mall Crossroads opening in 1999, and it was also the first to shut shop due to increase in competition. The mushrooming of malls in every suburban town of Mumbai, shows that there is demand, as these lifestyle malls have given birth to family entertainment and have become the hangout place for the youth of the city.
I p...
Finding open spaces for young couples to hangout in Mumbai can be quite a task. Apart from the crowded sea fronts like Marine Drive, Nariman Point, Bandstand, etc. couples aren't left with much choice. Either the moral police blows the whistle or few strangers are staring at you as if they are invisible.
When a huge garden comes up away from the hustle and bustle of the city, its always welcomed. I recently discovered this place called 'Mindspace Garden' on the edge of Malad creek, the...
Prithvi cafe in Juhu, the western suburb of Mumbai, conjures up fond memories of college days when my friends and myself would go there to enjoy the relaxed atmosphere, while sipping on hot cup of tea and relishing some delectable snacks. The open air cafe, next to the popular Prithvi theatre has a very unpretentious feel to it, that's what I like about it. The dimly lit paper lanterns, stone benches, bamboo fencing and a reinvented menu savouring the culinary delicacies of Mumbai, makes ...
Creating a buzz among music lovers, fine diners as well as contributing to Mumbai's throbbing nightlife is the swanky and chic Blue Frog. The 6000-sq foot complex, set amongst an erstwhile warehouse in Lower Parel, consists of a live music performance club, restaurant, lounge, sound stage, recording studio and sound lab.
The aesthetically designed interiors combined with live music of all genres – jazz, blues, funk, rock or electronic – has placed Blue Frog high on the popularity bar...
On weekends, you’ll see so many street bands are playing lively in Yoyogi Park. Those bands, solo-singers, and entertainers are lining the streets! Sometimes some bands have a very large crowd of fans watching them which may lead them to make it big!? Some today’s big name bands are known as the bands started from the streets such as WaT, Do As Infinity, Kobukuro, and others.
